My Name is Eric Lea and...
I am running for the Redmond School Board position #1 this May because I believe our children are worth the investment. Every child in our community deserves access to a quality public education that will prepare them for success in the 21st century.
I will direct our focus on the fundamentals of reading, writing, arithmetic, basic sciences, and history without bias or agenda. I believe we should equip our children to be informed and engaged in the social commentary, without that commentary driving the content of our curriculum.
We must instill in our students critical thinking skills. We need an urgent focus on foundational knowledge first and foremost. It is time to clearly demarcate curricular and extracurricular pursuits.
To achieve this mission, I will:
- Refocus our efforts on the basics of education, building a solid foundation on reading, writing, mathematics and science.
- Actively engage students in ownership of their own educational journey and success.
- Encourage diversity of thought in seeking solutions to the problems distracting us from success.
- Remove barriers that might prevent any student from accessing the tools necessary to be active participants in their own education.
- Ensure equal access to the resources and support every student needs to succeed.
- Promote an environment of productive discourse (return to lively, polite debate).
- Thoughtfully consider community dialog and seek to listen and learn.
- Reduce screen-time and promote authentic, interpersonal interactions with peers and families. There is no substitute for real life to learn appropriate behavior in real life.
- Work to help our community’s children recover from the years’ worth of progress stolen by the pandemic and pandemic policies. Enthusiastic engagement is the route to recovery.

Support our Teachers:
I will support our teachers, who are the backbone of our education system. This includes advocating for competitive salaries, professional development opportunities, and ensuring a supportive and safe work environment that allows them to focus on teaching our children.
Engage Families and Community:
I will engage families and community in the process, recognizing that education is a partnership between schools, families, and the community. I will partner with parents and community members to model for our students what success may look like, and how they can achieve success in our schools. All stakeholders benefit from educated, engaged young citizens.
Seek to Foster Innovation:
I will foster innovation in our schools, promoting creative ways to engage students, novel implementation of technology, and support a curriculum that will prepare our students for the changing demands of the 21st century.
We are making an impact in Redmond, but we must keep up the good work and remember that when students have poor modeling in the media they consume, we must stand in the gap and model what productive/appropriate behavior looks like.
By working together, we can ensure that every child in our district has access to a high-quality education that affords them the best opportunity for success. As a school board member, I will be committed to this mission and work passionately to make it a reality for every student in our district.
